Battle Site of the Night Raid on Pingyang

The Battle Site of the Night Raid on Pingyang is a cultural tourism attraction and a classic red tourism site.

In 1927, Chiang Kai-shek betrayed his promises and launched the “April 12 Counterrevolutionary Coup.” The Kuomintang Zhejiang Provincial Committee sent personnel to Pingyang to carry out a “Party Purge,” ordering the dissolution of all levels of peasant associations in Pingyang, the arrest and persecution of Communists, and plunging the entire county under a shadow of white terror. The Party organization was forced to shift to underground struggle. To resist the reactionary oppression of the Kuomintang, rescue imprisoned comrades, seize weapons, and arm themselves, after secret discussions, on the evening of June 17, 1927 (the 18th day of the fifth lunar month), Ye Tingpeng, Zhang Peinong, Wu Xinzhi, Shi Weixin, You Fu, Lin Zhen, Li Fuchen, and others led around 300 peasants and salt workers from areas such as Jiangnan and Beigang. Armed with homemade guns, spears, long pikes, bamboo leaf knives, daggers, and other weapons, they ambushed at the foot of Douniu Mountain near the East Gate of Pingyang to launch an armed uprising. As night fell, they advanced toward the citrus orchard at the East Gate drill ground, planning to break through the city gate and storm the police station to seize weapons first. However, due to insufficient experience, leaked information, and exposed positions, the enemy sentries opened fire. Left with no choice, the peasant militia had to retreat voluntarily. The next day, the enemy launched a manhunt for the rebel peasants, and Ye Tingpeng and others were placed on the wanted list, with their homes also ransacked. Although the uprising was not successful, it demonstrated the revolutionary spirit of the people of Pingyang—fearless in the face of repression and brave in resistance.

The Battle Site of the Night Raid on Pingyang is located at Xiantan Mountain in Kunyang Town, Pingyang County.
