Huìwén Academy

Huìwén Academy is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Zhejiang Province.

Huìwén Academy was first built during the Northern Song Dynasty as a study place for Chen Jingbang, who passed the imperial examination in the third year of Daguan, and his brother Chen Jingzheng. The two brothers studied under Cheng Yi and Cheng Hao, returned to their hometown to establish a school, and pioneered the Pingyang School of thought. The Southern Song scholar Zhu Xi once gave lectures here, which became a celebrated tale. The academy consists of an entrance gate, the main building, and the "Dì'è Shìhuī" (Fraternal Glory) building. The entrance gate is linear in layout, with a stone foundation wall and a hollow brick wall body covered with gray tiles. The main building of the academy has five bays and two stories, with a hip-and-gable roof. The central bay on the ground floor features lattice doors, while the others have lattice windows. The beam framework includes a front and rear double-step central beam with a single front step and two rear steps, and the rear eaves use hanging columns beneath the overhanging rafter plate—features that reflect local architectural characteristics.

The "Dì'è Shìhuī" building is a two-story brick structure designed in a Western-inspired style.

Today, the academy buildings are nestled amid the scenic landscape of Nan'yanshan, surrounded by outstanding sights and natural beauty.
