The "2014 International Woodcarving Art Exchange Exhibition," part of the Sanyi International Woodcarving Art Festival series of events, held its opening press conference at 10:00 AM on the 23rd at the Woodcarving Museum. This year’s international woodcarving art exchange exhibition features a total of 98 carefully selected woodcarving artworks, including 50 pieces by renowned Taiwanese artists, 46 pieces by masters from three regions in mainland China—Dongyang and Yueqing in Zhejiang, and Putian in Fujian—and 2 pieces from Japan. The exhibition runs from July 20 to October 12 at the Woodcarving Museum.

Taiwanese woodcarving artists, with their profound aesthetic foundation, skillfully utilize the natural forms of wood, borrowing the essence of nature to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.Works featuring landscapes, flowers, and birds showcase distinct personal artistic styles. Whether they draw on traditional heritage to present works with more classic imagery, or take a microscopic approach to simplify structure and form, these pieces refine aesthetics to their purest form while enveloping deep emotional expression.

 

The showcased works from mainland China mainly feature artists from Dongyang and Yueqing in Zhejiang, as well as Putian in Fujian. Dongyang woodcarving, in terms of traditional techniques, primarily employs...0flat relief and intaglio carving techniques0, characterized by an artistic style that uses scattered or multi-point perspective to create multi-layered visual effects. The carvings are exquisitely detailed, preserving the natural grain of the wood and presenting a uniquely delicate and elegant, strongly painterly aesthetic.. Yueqing woodcarving is distinguished by its use of boxwood to create ornamental 0round carving0 works, which define its artistic style. These pieces exhibit a strong sense of regional character. Putian woodcarving is famed for its 0intricate openwork carving0 technique, known for its refined structure, luxurious ornamentation, complexity, and depth, all in pursuit of aesthetic richness.

 

These three regions have a long history in the development of woodcarving art. It is not difficult to see from their works that each region presents a comprehensive system of characteristics, including subject matter, carving techniques, overall composition, material selection (emphasis on quality and beauty), and distinctive local color—all contributing to unique, regionally rooted styles. The exhibition of these works is sure to offer domestic audiences a different visual experience.
