The "2014 International Woodcarving Art Exchange Exhibition," part of the Sanyi International Woodcarving Art Festival series of events, held its opening press conference at 10:00 AM on the 23rd at the Woodcarving Museum. This year’s international woodcarving art exchange exhibition has invited 50 works by renowned Taiwanese artists, 46 works by masters from three regions in mainland China — Dongyang and Yueqing in Zhejiang, and Putian in Fujian — as well as 2 pieces from Japan, making a total of 98 carefully selected woodcarving works. The exhibition will be grandly displayed at the Woodcarving Museum from July 20 to October 12.

This year’s theme, “Landscape, Flowers, and Birds,” explores the rich cultural connotations and life experiences presented through both realistic and abstract interpretations of these subjects by artists from different regions. (Image provided by MOOK Editorial Department)

Taiwanese woodcarving artists, with their profound aesthetic sensibilities, skillfully utilize the natural forms of wood, drawing inspiration from its inherent charm, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. The landscape, flower, and bird works feature distinctive styles that reflect each artist’s unique artistic vision. Whether drawing on traditional foundations to present works with more classical imagery, or taking a microscopic approach to pursue minimalism in structure and form, these pieces distill the purest aesthetic sensations while enveloping the deepest emotional expressions.

The works invited from mainland China mainly feature woodcarvers from Dongyang and Yueqing in Zhejiang, and Putian in Fujian. Dongyang woodcarving, in terms of traditional techniques, is characterized byits use of “flat relief carving techniques,” creating an art style that employs scattered or multiple vanishing points to achieve multi-layered visual effects. The craftsmanship is meticulous, preserving the natural grain of the wood, and presenting an elegant and uniquely refined artistic style with strong painterly qualities.Yueqing woodcarving is distinguished by its use of boxwood to create ornamental “round carving” pieces, forming the core of its artistic identity. The regional characteristics embedded in the artworks are quite pronounced. Putian woodcarving is famed for its “exquisite openwork carving” technique, with intricate structures, ornate decorations, and a richly layered aesthetic that pursues a deep accumulation of refined taste.

These three regions all have a long history in the development of woodcarving art. It is not difficult to see from their works that each region presents a comprehensive system that includes thematic content, carving techniques, composition, material selection (emphasis on fine quality), and distinctive local color, all constructing a unique and regionally characteristic stylistic identity. The exhibition of these works is sure to offer domestic audiences a different visual experience.

Lin Pi-tung, Director of the International Cultural and Tourism Bureau, stated that the annually held International Woodcarving Art Exchange Exhibition invites woodcarving artists from Taiwan and around the world with distinctive creative styles to observe and exchange ideas. The event looks forward to creators of different nationalities, ethnic backgrounds, and woodcarving techniques learning from one another, allowing woodcarving art to become a shared aesthetic that transcends borders and cultures.
