The “2014 International Woodcarving Art Exchange Exhibition,” part of the Sanyi International Woodcarving Art Festival series, held its press conference at 10:00 AM on the 23rd at the Woodcarving Museum. This year’s international woodcarving art exchange exhibition features a selection of 98 exquisite woodcarvings, including 50 works by renowned Taiwanese artists, 46 pieces by masters from three regions in mainland China—Dongyang and Yueqing in Zhejiang, and Putian in Fujian—and 2 works from Japan. The exhibition will be grandly displayed at the Woodcarving Museum from July 20 to October 12.

Taiwanese woodcarving artists, with their profound aesthetic sensibility, skillfully utilize the natural forms of wood and borrow from nature’s charm to transform the ordinary into the legendary.Works featuring landscapes, flowers, and birds exhibit distinctive personal artistic styles. Whether drawing on traditional depth to present more conventional imagery or adopting a microscopic perspective to simplify structure and form, they refine the purest aesthetic sensations while enveloping the most profound emotional expressions.
The invited works from mainland China primarily feature carvers from Dongyang and Yueqing in Zhejiang, and Putian in Fujian. Dongyang woodcarving, in terms of traditional techniques, is characterized by0 flat relief carving and deep relief carving techniques0 as its main artistic style. It employs scattered or multiple vanishing points to create multi-layered visual sensations, with meticulous carving that preserves the natural grain of the wood, presenting a uniquely elegant and painterly artistic style.. Yueqing woodcarving is distinguished by its use of boxwood to create ornamental 0 round carving0 techniques, forming a strong artistic identity, with works that distinctly reflect local cultural characteristics. Putian woodcarving is famed for its 0 exquisite openwork carving0 techniques, known for its refined structures, luxurious ornamentation, intricate heaviness, and pursuit of aesthetic richness.
These three regions have long histories in the development of woodcarving art. Their works clearly demonstrate unique regional characteristics in subject matter, carving techniques, composition, material selection (emphasizing fine quality), and distinct local color, constructing a comprehensive system that embodies localized and distinctive stylistic identities. The display of these works is sure to offer domestic audiences a different visual experience.
