Xianshengmen Scenic Area

Where two cliffs stand opposite each other, it’s called a “gate.” There are over a dozen such scenic spots known as “gates” in Mount Yandang, but Xianshengmen is the most spectacular. Formed by two towering cliffs facing each other, it’s also known as a “stone gate,” or alternatively, the “Fairy Gate.”

This gate stands roughly 200 meters tall, with the two sides just over 10 meters apart, hence earning the title of the “No. 1 Gate under Heaven” and ranking as the best among Mount Yandang’s “gates.” The cliffs rise steeply, reaching toward the sky with an awe-inspiring and majestic presence. Inside the gate, sheer cliffs enclose the area, creating a solemn atmosphere. Beneath your feet, the stream babbles crisply, lending an extremely serene ambiance. When you look up, the cliffs meet overhead, leaving only a narrow slit — “except at noon or midnight, the sun and moon remain unseen.”

The Ming Dynasty scholar Wang Wan wrote in *A Tour of the Stone Buddha Cave*: “Looking up, one sees massive rocks, each several zhang tall, overlapping above and meeting at the top, with only a narrow gap of a foot or so in between. One can walk inside…”

…for several hundred steps, as if entering crimson palace gates opening and closing in the ethereal heights of the sky — this is Xianshengmen.” Xu Xiake mentioned in *Postscript to My Travels in Mount Yandang* that “the path was overgrown and impassable,” indicating how treacherous the route was at the time.

At the entrance of the scenic area, you’ll find the Nan’ge Memorial Archway Cluster. Within the area lies Zhang Lun’s Tomb, one of the largest existing burial sites in Yueqing City. There are also natural attractions such as the San Shui Waterfall. The Stone Buddha Cave is nestled between the steep cliffs inside Xianshengmen, unreachable on foot. You can take the scenic area bus from Xianglingtou. Alternatively, you can hire a car, which typically costs around 80–100 yuan for an afternoon (negotiable down to 60 yuan). Food · Accommodation · Shopping
