Wanxiang Barrier

Also known as Jinping Barrier. Upon entering the scenic area parking lot, you’ll face this southern-facing barrier right away — a sheer cliff over 1,000 feet high, stretching more than 300 meters from north to south, with a grand and solemn atmosphere. It does appear that there are several rock faces resembling elephants within the barrier, but that’s not the origin of its name. The “Wanxiang” (万象) here refers to the “myriad things” or “all things” in expressions like “wanxiang gengxin” (万象更新, meaning “a new look for everything” or “all things renewed”) and “baorong wanxiang” (包罗万象, meaning “all-embracing” or “covering everything”).

This barrier presents a myriad of vivid scenes — including rock formations resembling a stone candle, a gauze hat, a mother hen, chicks, an immortal plowing, a lovesick maiden, pavilions and palaces, visitors offering incense, and swirling clouds — hence its name “Wanxiang Barrier” (Barrier of Myriad Things).

When admiring this barrier, do not just “glance cursorily” and pass by quickly. Instead, take your time to look up and contemplate carefully, and you will discover endless charm and moments of insight.
