In September 1944, the Japanese army occupied Yueqing. The Yueqing County Committee of the Communist Party of China made the decision to take up arms against the Japanese, establishing the Yueqing People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Unit under Party leadership while also assisting in the formation of allied anti-Japanese forces — the Yueqing Fishing Area Special Task Force and the 4th Squadron of the Nationalist Yueqing County Garrison (referred to as the “4th Squadron”). Having obtained intelligence that the die-hard Nationalists planned to “eliminate” the 4th Squadron, on February 24, 1945, the Yueqing County Committee held an emergency meeting in Niutang Village, Sodu Township, and decided to instigate an uprising of the 4th Squadron. On the 25th, after discussions between the county committee leaders Qiu Qinghua, Zhou Peizhen, Ye Lingyin, Zheng Meixin and the 4th Squadron leaders Chen Ji and Wang Minggao in Heqi Village, Hongqiao, they took advantage of an evening banquet hosted at Datong Hospital in Hongqiao for Wu Kun, commander of the Nationalist Self-Defense Battalion, and successfully disarmed the Nationalist Self-Defense forces. Subsequently, the 4th Squadron announced its uprising in Hongqiao. On the 26th, the Yueqing County Committee proclaimed the establishment of the Yueqing People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Corps in Nüzhi Primary School in Hongqiao Town, with Zhou Peizhen as commander, Qiu Qinghua as political commissar, and a total of seven squadrons comprising 500 men and weapons. At the same time, the Yueqing People’s Anti-Japanese Committee was formed, with Wang Minggao as director and Ye Lingyin as deputy director. In March, the Yueqing People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Corps merged with the Ou’bei Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Unit to form the Yongle People’s Anti-Japanese Self-Defense Guerrilla Corps, becoming a backbone force in the anti-Japanese armed struggle in southern Zhejiang.
