Monument Pavilion Commemorating the Establishment of the Democratic Government of Yueqing County

The Monument Pavilion Commemorating the Establishment of the Democratic Government of Yueqing County is a classic red tourism attraction.

With the rapid development of the national liberation war situation, a major turning point also occurred in the struggle between the enemy and us in Yueqing and Kuocang areas. The guerrilla forces took the initiative to attack enemy strongholds. Except for a few market towns and parts of the plains area, the vast rural guerrilla base areas and guerrilla zones had been linked together. In August 1948, the CPC Southern Zhejiang Special Committee decided to establish the Yueqing County Administrative Preparatory Committee and gradually carry out democratic governance work. On May 8, 1949, the Democratic Government of Yueqing County was officially established in Shangmashi Village, Yian Township. Ye Lingyin, the county party secretary, also served as the head of the county's democratic government. On the 10th, Yueqing County’s urban area was declared liberated. On the 12th, the county party committee and the democratic government offices moved to Hongqiao Town. On the 26th, they moved into the county seat. On September 1, the Democratic Government of Yueqing County was renamed the People’s Government of Yueqing County.

The Monument Pavilion Commemorating the Establishment of the Democratic Government of Yueqing County is located in Shangmashi Village, Yanhu Township, Yueqing City. In 1993, the village built an octagonal double-eaved stone pavilion near the original site where the democratic government was founded, naming it “Shangma Pavilion.” The Shangma Pavilion is a stone structure with two levels, featuring upturned eaves and supported by eight pillars, with seven stone slabs forming a stone bench. Inside the pavilion stands a stone stele inscribed with the history of the pavilion’s construction. The exterior of the pavilion is surrounded by a corridor made of stainless steel pipes, encircling three sides of the pavilion, with stone tables and benches set inside the corridor. The couplet on the pavilion reads:

Sweeping away the old rule’s gloom as the clear river flows on

Welcoming the new government’s dawn that stands with Mount Yandang
