Tomb of Mr. Zhang Huainan

The Tomb of Mr. Zhang Huainan is a cultural tourism attraction.

Zhang Chong (1904–1941), courtesy name Huainan, was a native of Toutou Village, Mingyu Township (now Beibaixiang Town), Yueqing. He studied successively at Yueqing Third Primary School, Zhejiang Provincial Tenth Middle School, Beijing Jiaotong University, and Harbin Political and Legal University. After graduating from university, he went to Moscow, Soviet Union for a short-term study abroad. Upon returning to China, he engaged in secret anti-warlord activities against Zhang Zuolin of the Fengtian Clique in the Northeast and was imprisoned in March 1927. He was released from prison in 1929 and returned to Nanjing, where he held successive positions as Special Commissioner of the Kuomintang (KMT) Harbin Party Department, Committee Member of the Tianjin Party Department, and Secretary of the Nanjing Special City Party Department. After 1933, he served as Head of the Film Affairs Division of the KMT Central Propaganda Department and Director of the International News Photo Agency, Director of the Gansu Provincial Construction Department, and Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in the Soviet Union. After returning to China in 1935, he was elected as an Executive Committee Member of the KMT Central Committee at the age of just 32, becoming the youngest Central Executive Committee Member of the KMT at that time. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, he served successively as Senior Consultant Affairs Officer of the KMT National Government Military Commission General Office, Executive Committee Member of the KMT Central Committee, and Acting Deputy Minister of the Organization Department. He was involved in major historical events such as restoring Sino-Soviet diplomatic relations, the Second United Front negotiations between the KMT and the Communist Party, three massive military aid packages from the Soviet Union to China, and uniting the international anti-fascist camp. He made outstanding contributions to forming the Anti-Japanese National United Front and upholding united resistance. He passed away in Chongqing on August 11, 1941.

At his memorial service, the Chinese Communist Party leaders including Mao Zedong and Zhu De sent a couplet in his honor, reading: “He worked tirelessly to unite internally with the Communists and externally with the Soviets; seven years of dedication were as constant as one single day.” Zhou Enlai wrote on a memorial scroll: “In times of safety or danger, who stood together? In stormy weather, we recall sharing the same boat.” Xinhua Daily published a special memorial page for Zhang Chong that day. An article commemorating Mr. Zhang Huainan, written by Zhou Enlai, stated: “Mr. Huainan accompanied me on visits to Mount Mogan and twice to Mount Kuanglu. In all his endeavors, I was always informed. Thanks to his efforts, the two parties grew closer, and the cooperative framework was formed.” It fully affirmed his outstanding contribution to KMT-CPC cooperation and united resistance against Japan, expressing the high regard of the Chinese Communist Party for this patriotic statesman.

The Tomb of Mr. Zhang Huainan is located on Lion Mountain in Toutou Village, Beibaixiang Town, Yueqing City. It was completed in May 1995, covering an area of approximately 600 square meters. The front of the tombstone is inscribed with Zhou Enlai’s handwriting: “Tomb of Mr. Zhang Huainan.” The back features a biography stele of Zhang Chong, as well as commemorative inscriptions by KMT leaders of that time.

The Tomb of Mr. Zhang Huainan is a Yueqing Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit and a Yueqing Municipal Patriotic Education Base.

Zhang Chong (1903–1941), courtesy name Huainan, also known as Zhang Chong, was a native of Yueqing County, Zhejiang Province. He was a progressive member of the Kuomintang.

In July 1925, Zhang Chong graduated from Beijing Jiaotong University. To pursue further studies abroad, he came to Harbin in August and continued his studies at Harbin Political and Legal University. During his time at school, he actively participated in anti-imperialist and patriotic activities and joined the Chinese Kuomintang. At that time, during the First KMT-CPC United Front, Zhang Chong was elected as an Executive Committee Member of the KMT Harbin Special City Party Department.
