Former Site of the Jiepailing Battle

On November 12, 1948, when Qiu Qinghua, Zhou Peizhen, Zheng Meixin, and others led the Kuocang Detachment from Shimencun Village in Dajing to Lijiashan Village, they received intelligence from local militiamen of Longxi Township: the vanguard unit of the Kuomintang, the 2nd Squadron of the 1st Assault Battalion of Taizhou, which had been ordered to “suppress” the revolutionary forces, had set out from Dajing and was advancing toward Jiepailing near Zhuangwucun. After hearing the report, the detachment leaders immediately held an emergency meeting and decided to organize an ambush using the unique terrain of Jiepailing. The Kuocang Detachment closely cooperated with the militiamen of Longxi Township, dividing into three routes and taking advantage of the favorable terrain to set up ambush positions. When the 2nd Squadron of the 1st Assault Battalion of the Kuomintang’s Taizhou Assault Unit fully entered the ambush zone, machine guns, rifles, and grenades erupted from the mountains. The Kuomintang soldiers surrendered en masse. Yang Shidi, the Kuomintang major and squadron leader, along with six others including squad leaders, took refuge in a roadside cave to resist but were eventually killed. This battle completely annihilated the Kuomintang vanguard unit, the 2nd Squadron of the 1st Assault Battalion of the Taizhou Assault Unit, which was “suppressing” the revolutionary base at Zeji in Yueqing. Ten enemies were killed, including Major Yang Shidi and Squad Leader Teng Xiongyue, 35 were captured (including squad leaders and below), 32 rifles, 6 carbines, 1 homemade pistol, and over 600 rounds of various ammunition were seized. Additionally, the detachment obtained the Kuomintang’s operational plans and orders, thwarting their “mopping-up” operations in the Ou’bei region.

The Former Site of the Jiepailing Battle is located on Jiepailing in Longxi Township, Yueqing City. The site features rugged and steep terrain, overgrown vegetation, and only a small path leading up along the stream.
