Martyrs' Cemetery of Zhangkengtian

The Martyrs' Cemetery of Zhangkengtian is a classic red tourism attraction.

Sodu was an area where the underground Communist Party and anti-Japanese guerrilla forces in Yueqing were frequently active. In 1927, under the leadership of the Yueqing Branch of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), most villages in Sodu established peasant associations and peasant Red Guards. In 1939, the CCP Yueqing County Committee set up the Sodu Branch in Sodu Township. In the summer of 1943, the Yueqing County Committee decided to establish an underground communication station in the home of Mei Dimin in Meiau Village. This station connected upward to the county committee’s communication post in Shanmian and downward to other stations and contact points in Hongqiao, Shajiao, and Yandang, playing a significant role in safeguarding the safety and daily life of the county committee leaders.

During the Anti-Japanese War, under the Party’s leadership, the revolutionary forces in Sodu grew continuously and actively supported the armed struggle against Japan. During the Liberation War, as the situation evolved, the people of Sodu formed a district armed work team and established internal connections within enemy forces. Cooperating with the guerrilla units led by our Party, they struck powerful blows against the enemy and contributed significantly to the liberation of the people. A total of 28 revolutionary martyrs from Sodu Township sacrificed their lives for the nation. To commemorate their heroic deeds, the Sodu Township Party Committee and government raised funds through public contributions, selected Zhangkengtian to build a pavilion and monument, and established a Revolutionary Martyrs Exhibition Room to educate future generations.

The Martyrs' Cemetery of Zhangkengtian is located in the mountainous area west of Zhang’ao Village, Sodu Township, Yueqing City. The Wulong Taoist Temple within the cemetery was originally one of the underground activity sites and storage locations for guerrilla forces during the Anti-Japanese War.
