Site of the Dajing Battle

In 1949, the defending enemy forces in Dajing Town consisted of the Nationalist District Defense Squadron and the Third Regular Squadron of Yueqing County, totaling over 140 men. Xiang Tiguang, the Nationalist district chief of Dajing, had built two layers of bunkers around the town, with the command post set up in the Kuixing Pavilion on a small hill. On the night of March 15, Zhou Peizhen, commander of the Kuocang Detachment, led the detachment’s First, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Squadrons from Xie Gong Ridge in Yandang Mountain. They advanced along two routes and, in close coordination with local militia led by civilian workers such as Chen Qingbo and Zhou Shijing, swiftly cleared the Nationalist army’s two defensive lines before concentrating firepower to launch a fierce assault on Xiang Tiguang’s headquarters—the Kuixing Pavilion on the small hill. During the battle, the guerrillas damaged the water storage equipment in the Nationalist army’s kitchen, leaving the soldiers without access to water and suffering from hunger and thirst, which quickly sapped their morale. The Kuocang Detachment then launched a political offensive, sending letters to persuade the enemy to surrender. At 1 p.m. on March 16, after receiving the third letter of persuasion, the Nationalists raised a white flag from the Kuixing Pavilion, signaling their intention to lay down their arms and surrender, and Dajing was thus liberated.

The Site of the Dajing Battle is located on Xiaoshantou in Dajing Town, Yueqing City. The area is shaded by lush trees, with a small stream murmuring nearby, offering a beautiful environment. The site is currently managed and used by the Dajing Town Cultural Activity Center.
