Battle Site of Yeteng Ridge

The Battle Site of Yeteng Ridge is a cultural tourism attraction.

On May 1, 1930, the Ninth Company of the 135th Regiment of the 45th Division of the Kuomintang, stationed in Dajing, experienced unrest among its troops due to months of unpaid wages. The company commander, Zhang Yuzhi, planned to lead a mutiny and defect to the Wugen Guerrilla Unit of Wenling County. The guerrilla unit sent Ye Jingtai to Dajing to rendezvous with them, and the combined force totaled over 300 people. When the Kuomintang’s 135th Regiment, 45th Division, stationed in Wenzhou, learned of the mutiny of the Ninth Company, the regimental commander led a company of infantry to Dajing to “suppress and pursue” them. He also persuaded Zhang Yuzhi to “eliminate the bandits and return to the camp” through local gentry such as Jiang Shunan and Zhang Songru. Under pressure, Zhang turned against the guerrillas. Unaware of the internal situation, the guerrilla unit still set out on May 7 along the originally planned route from Nan? toward Taihu Mountain. Caught off guard, the fighters of the guerrilla unit were surrounded at Yeteng Ridge in Shuangfeng Township and ultimately suffered defeat due to being outnumbered. Thirteen were killed, and the rest scattered. A large quantity of ammunition was lost. Upon learning of the incident, Jin Guanzhen, the political commissar of the 13th Red Army, reported to the Central Committee on May 12: “Five days ago, due to the defection and subsequent reversion of the national army, we suffered great losses. Over ten firearms were seized by the national army, and more than ten people died.” After the setback at Yeteng Ridge, the Wugen Guerrilla Unit of Wenling returned to Wugen to regroup and boost morale in order to seek new opportunities to strike the enemy. In July of the same year, guerrilla units across Taizhou were reorganized into the 2nd Regiment of the 13th Red Army.
