Shang'ao Martyrs' Shrine

The Shang'ao Martyrs' Shrine is a cultural relic protection unit of Yueqing City.

The Martyrs' Shrine is located in Shang'ao Village, Lingdi Township, Yueqing City. It is a single-story wooden building, about 100 square meters in size with three bays across the front. In the central bay stands a stone stele inscribed with the "Record of the Shrine to Martyr Shao."

Shao Chuanliang (1884–1913), also known as Qi Yao and styled Jiesan, participated in the campaigns to reclaim Hangzhou and capture Nanjing during the Xinhai Revolution. In the first year of the Republic of China, he was appointed as a second lieutenant in the Zhejiang Army, and subsequently served as the supervisor of the Shaoxing garrison and an officer in the Zhejiang Merit Bureau, as well as a detachment officer of the 12th Brigade of the Army. When Yuan Shikai seized power, he dispatched Jin Hualin to serve as an advisor to Zhu Rui, the Governor of Zhejiang, in order to keep Zhu under surveillance. On the eve of the "Second Revolution," Chuanliang was killed at the age of 29 after a secret letter regarding his plan to “win over the governor and remove Advisor Jin” was leaked. In 1916, Lü Gongwang, Governor and Provincial Governor of Zhejiang, paid tribute to the martyr and provided compensation. Chuanliang’s remains were reinterred on Dingjia Mountain in West Lake, and a shrine and stele were erected in his hometown.

Lingdi Township: Located in the northeastern mountainous region of Yueqing City, Lingdi Township borders Furong Town to the east, connects with Yongjia County to the west, faces Danxi Town to the south, and lies adjacent to Yanhu Township to the north. The area features dense forests, fresh air, beautiful scenery, a pleasant climate, and especially the simple and honest local customs that add to its charm. During the Anti-Japanese War and the Liberation War, this was a renowned revolutionary base in southern Zhejiang. The Yongjia-Yueqing Anti-Japanese Self-Defense Guerrilla Unit operated in the region, carrying out guerrilla warfare and making outstanding contributions to the revolutionary cause. It has long been known as Yueqing’s “Jinggang Mountains.”
