Carvings on the Cliffs of Dalongqiu

The carvings on the cliffs of Dalongqiu are a cultural relic protection unit of Yueqing City.

The carvings on the cliffs of Dalongqiu are located in Yandang Mountain, Yueqing City. Dalongqiu is one of the “Three Wonders of Yandang” — the other two being “Two Spirits and One Dragon.” It has long attracted numerous renowned visitors throughout history. Today, at Lianyunzhang, there are 28 cliff inscriptions and 7 stone tablets remaining. Among them, there is 1 from the Tang Dynasty, 2 from the Song Dynasty, 4 from the Ming Dynasty, 7 from the Qing Dynasty, 15 from the Republic of China period, and 6 with undetermined dates. Notable examples include: an inscription by Tang Dynasty poet Du Shenyan (646–c. 708) that reads “Du Shenyan was here,” an inscription from the Jiayou era (1056–1063) of the Song Dynasty by Zhang Gui, Transport Commissioner of Two Zhe Provinces, reading “Zhang Gui, Lord Tang’s Visit,” an inscription from the 30th year of the Ming Jiajing era (1551) by Xue Yingqi, Vice Education Commissioner of Zhejiang, which says “Xue Yingqi visited this place in deep autumn,” an inscription from the 28th year of the Qing Daoguang era (1848) by Liang Zhangju, former Jiangsu Governor and later Viceroy of Liangguang, and calligraphy by Kang Youwei in 1924 (the 13th year of the Republic of China) that reads “The White Dragon Descends.”
