Main Hall of Baihe Temple

The Main Hall of Baihe Temple is a cultural heritage site protected by Yueqing City.

The Main Hall of Baihe Temple is situated within Yueqing High School in Yueqing City. It was donated by Zhang Jian (Wenjun) in the third year of the Yonghe era during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (347). In the second year of the Jingyou era of the Northern Song Dynasty (1035), monks from the temple traveled to the capital to obtain the earliest collection of Buddhist scriptures in Wenzhou. In May of the third year of the Xuanhe era (1121), Yu Dao’an from Yongjia responded to the Fang La Rebellion, captured Yueqing County, and stationed troops in this temple for two months. During the Xinhai Revolution period, Monk Yuékōng (Huang Feilong) established the “Monk-Civilian School” here to engage in revolutionary activities.

The temple was renovated in the early years of the Republic of China, and Li Yuanhong inscribed a plaque that read “Fǎyuán Yóulóng” (The Dharma Garden Still Has Its Dragon). Originally, it had structures such as a mountain gate, front hall, Mahavira Hall, east and west wing rooms, and an abbot’s tower, but today only the Mahavira Hall remains. This wooden structure features a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof, with a five-bay width, an overall span of 18 meters, a total depth of 14.20 meters, and a platform base 1.10 meters high.
