Wuyi Danxia Tourist Area

The Wuyi Danxia Tourist Area in Zhejiang Province is located in the central part of Wuyi County, about 20 kilometers from the county seat, on the western side of Provincial Highway 44 (Shangsong Line). It is a core scenic area for tourism in Wuyi. Covering nearly 10 square kilometers of typical Danxia landform, the "Ten Miles of Danxia, Ten Miles of Gallery" presents an exquisitely beautiful natural scroll crafted by nature's master hand. The Danxia landform in Wuyi is a unique type of terrain discovered and named by Chinese geologists — wherever there is Danxia, there are extraordinary mountains and exotic waters. The Danxia formations in Wuyi consist of purplish-red conglomerate interbedded with red siltstone, forming the classic red Danxia rock mass. Around 80 million years ago, during the late Cretaceous period, under the influence of newly formed tectonic fractures from Earth’s movements, coupled with tens of millions of years of dissolution, erosion, gravitational collapse, and weathering, the Wuyi Danxia developed its colorful and diverse landform features. Highlights include the Dahongyan (Big Red Cliff), said to be the largest Danxia red cliff in the world; the Kongtong Mountain, where the legendary immortal Guangchengzi attained enlightenment and the Yellow Emperor, the cultural ancestor of the Chinese people, found spiritual awakening; as well as the common Danxia landform elements such as gullies, valleys, caves, pillars, and cliffs. There are also vividly shaped rock formations resembling lions, elephants, whales, monkeys, and turtles — all uniquely diverse and remarkably lifelike. Visitors to Wuyi Danxia often exclaim with heartfelt admiration, "The Wuyi Danxia Mountains are even more spectacular than the Wuyi Mountains."
