Pan Mohua was the pen name of Kaiyao, whose formal given name was Pan Xun. He was born in 1902 in Shangtan Village, Tanhong Township, Xuanping County (now part of Wuyi County). In his early years, he studied at Zhejiang First Provincial Normal School, where he co-founded the Morning Light Society and the Lakeside Poetry Society. He was a resolute communist fighter as well as a renowned left-wing writer, poet, and revolutionary. Together with Ying Xiuren, Wang Jingzhi, and Feng Xuefeng, he was hailed as one of the “Four Lakeside Gentlemen” of China’s poetry scene. He attended private school from the age of four, and after graduating from the Xuanping County Normal Training School at 13, he worked as a teacher at Shangtan and Shangtao Primary Schools. In 1920, he was admitted to Zhejiang First Normal School, where he participated in the New Culture Movement, helped establish the new literary group “Morning Light Society,” and joined the “Lakeside Poetry Society.” In 1924, he was admitted to Peking University, joined the Communist Party, and in the winter of 1926 left the university to go to Wuhan to join the Northern Expedition Army, serving in the political department. In September 1927, he returned to Xuanping to develop party organizations. In the summer of 1928, he successively went to Xiamen, Kaifeng, and Beiping to engage in underground party work. In 1930, he attended the founding conference of the Chinese Left-Wing Writers’ League, participated in establishing northern organizations such as the “Left League,” “Social Science League,” and “Coaching Group,” and was one of the leaders of the Northern Left League. In 1932, the Party assigned him to Tianjin to organize the underground party, after which he went to Zhangjiakou to join the Anti-Japanese Allied Forces. In December 1933, he returned to Tianjin to serve as the Propaganda Minister of the Tianjin Municipal Committee of the CPC. In February 1934, he was arrested for the fifth time, launched struggles in prison, and on December 24 of the same year, made the ultimate sacrifice. In 1944, the Red Army guerrillas destroyed enemy mining sites and disrupted fluorite transportation, driving the invaders out of China. In 1949, Wuyi was liberated. The people in the base areas endured the hardest times and achieved final victory in the war. Today, as we revisit the glorious deeds of the martyrs, we aim to learn from and carry forward their fearless revolutionary spirit.
