Former Site of Shen Jiaben’s Residence

The former site of Shen Jiaben’s residence is a cultural heritage protection unit of Huzhou City.

The former site of Shen Jiaben’s residence is located in Wuxing District. It dates back to the Qing Dynasty and is categorized as a representative modern-era building.

In October 1994, the former site of Shen Jiaben’s residence was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage protection unit.

Shen Jiaben (1840–1913), courtesy name Zichun, also known as Jizhai, was a native of Wuxing (now Huzhou). His father, Bingying, achieved the degree of Jinshi (imperial scholar) and served as an official in the Ministry of Punishments as well as Prefect of Anshun in Guizhou. In 1862, during the first year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty, Shen passed the imperial examination at the provincial level and was appointed as a chief clerk in the Zhili (now Beijing) and Shaanxi divisions. He earned the recognition of Pan Wenqin, Minister of the Ministry of Punishments. In 1883, during the ninth year of the Guangxu reign, he earned the Jinshi degree and was assigned as Chief Compiler in the Fengtian (now Shenyang) division, concurrently serving as Acting Director of the Autumn Review Office and Assistant Supervisor of the Law and Statute Bureau. He was later promoted to the positions of Associate Manager and Manager. In the 19th year of Guangxu (1893), he was appointed Prefect of Tianjin.
