Shi Jian Hall is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Shi Jian Hall is located in Zhenze Town, Wujiang, Jiangsu Province, at the border between Jiangsu and Zhejiang.

Shi Jian Hall was once the residence of the Xu family, a prominent clan in Zhenze. The estate covers an area of over 2,000 mu, faces south, and features a grand five-bay-wide structure with six courtyards enclosed by high walls, comprising a total of 147 rooms of varying sizes. The compound integrates a river dock, warehouses, shops, streets, halls, inner residences, gardens, and servant quarters, with the street built within the residence and the residence containing the street. The architectural layout skillfully arranges three axes to create a compact spatial composition, presenting a solemn and traditional Chinese style that combines the functions of official, scholarly, and commercial use. It is a representative building reflecting the characteristics and local features of late Qing Dynasty industrial and commercial gentry engaged in trade, and is a rare example of modern folk architecture in the Jiangnan region.

The layout of Shi Jian Hall is extremely regular and rigorous, with the total width of the six courtyards deviating by less than 5 centimeters. If all the doors are open, one can see straight through from the river dock to the screen door of the sixth courtyard, showcasing the profound depth of the courtyard and embodying the hierarchical architectural style of the feudal era. The terrain of Shi Jian Hall gradually rises from the first to the sixth courtyard, with a total elevation difference of 45 centimeters, and the six horse-head walls also increase in height one after another, symbolizing "rising step by step."

The Chujing Garden within Shi Jian Hall covers only 240 square meters, making it the smallest garden in China. The garden features pavilions, corridors, rockeries, and caves beneath the artificial hills, with a half pavilion atop. The varying heights create a richly layered design, making it the most exquisitely designed Jiangnan-style garden in China. The garden floor is paved with fine-textured stones, offering delicate and varied patterns. To the east is a winding corridor along the wall, undulating and staggered in height, while to the west is a stacked rockery with a wall-leaning half pavilion on top.

The ingenious spatial arrangement of the six courtyards of Shi Jian Hall creates a solemn and traditional Chinese style, making it a grand residence in the water town. The interior decorations of the building are exquisitely perfect, with its various carvings being particularly outstanding. Whether brick carvings, wood carvings, or lacquer carvings, they are all refined, elegant, and vividly shaped. The patterns are delicate, lively, and lifelike, with themes including figures, flowers, birds, mythical beasts, and auspicious symbols, as well as some related to the legends of historical figures in the ancient town and famous poetic inscriptions. The layout is diverse, and the carving techniques are varied, combining solemnity, elegance, beauty, and charm with subtle humor and enduring intrigue.

In 2006, Shi Jian Hall was listed by the State Council as a sixth batch National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit as a Qing Dynasty historical building.
