Wujiang Smoked Bean Tea

Wujiang is located by Taihu Lake, where rivers crisscross, making it abundant in fish, rice, fruits, and legumes. Local farmers smoke and roast beans to make smoked bean tea.

The tea is primarily made with roasted beans, supplemented by green tea, along with fried sesame seeds, dried carrot strips, orange peel, and fresh Zhenze black tofu, giving it a slightly salty flavor.

When brewing smoked bean tea, first place fine tea leaves in a teacup and pour in 95°C hot water. Then add thirty to forty smoked beans. Some people put both the tea leaves and smoked beans into the cup together before pouring the hot water. In this case, the tea leaves and beans float and drift in the tea as it steeps, gradually sinking to the bottom, at which point it’s ready to drink. Today, in many towns across Wujiang, rural households still maintain the custom of making and serving this tea to guests.
