China Sex Culture Museum

The China Sex Culture Museum is located to the east of the famous Tuisi Garden tourist attraction in Tongli, sharing a wall with this UNESCO World Heritage-listed classical garden. It stands on the former site of the Lize Girls' School, established in 1902, surrounded by an elegant environment with lush trees, birdsong, floral scents, and pleasant scenery. To establish this museum, the Tongli town government invested over 3 million yuan to build and renovate buildings. Part of its exhibition areas feature Western architectural styles from the late Qing and early Republican periods, while other sections showcase the classic garden style of the Jiangnan region. The renovated China Sex Culture Museum has an indoor exhibition space of 3,800 square meters and an outdoor garden area of 5,200 square meters.

The museum displays over 2,000 artifacts related to ancient Chinese sex culture, including sculptures, paintings, and books, spanning several thousand years of history. Among them, the oldest exhibits date back over 8,000 years, with more than 20 rare pieces dating back over 5,000 years. The exhibitions are divided into sections covering sex in primitive society, marriage and women, sexuality in daily life, and sexuality in special fields. There are also dedicated zones for ancient culture and sex worship, marriage and family life along with the oppression of women, religion and foreign sexual cultures.

The museum was founded in 1995. At that time, Liu Dalin borrowed 300,000 yuan to establish the museum in Xujing Town, Qingpu County, Shanghai, but due to its remote location, it attracted very few visitors. It wasn’t until 1999 that the museum relocated near Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street in Shanghai. Although this new location was closer to the bustling city center, being situated in a small alley still made it difficult to draw visitors. Liu Dalin tried to erect signs on the pedestrian street, but did not receive approval from the relevant authorities. In 2001, the museum was forced to move again to a lower-rent location on Wuding Road in Shanghai, but financial issues remained unresolved. The museum was finally relocated to Tongli, Jiangsu Province, in 2003, and officially opened to the public on April 18, 2004.

Tongli Town: One of China’s Six Ancient Towns of the Jiangnan region, Tongli was formerly known as “Futu,” which was changed to “Tongli” in the early Tang Dynasty, and then the characters were rearranged during the Song Dynasty to form its current name. Established during the Song Dynasty, it has a history of over 1,000 years as of 2015 and is a well-known ancient water town in China.

Tongli Town is located in Wujiang District, Suzhou City, 18 kilometers from downtown Suzhou and 80 kilometers from Shanghai. Covering an area of 33 hectares, the town is embraced by five lakes and connected by 49 bridges, with a network of rivers dividing it into seven islands.
