Former Residence of Yang Tianji

The former residence of Yang Tianji is a cultural relic protection unit of Suzhou.

The former residence of Yang Tianji is located at Hongta Dai (No. 107 Dongxi Street).

This house was built in the late Qing Dynasty, faces south with four courtyards, covers a construction area of 511.21 square meters, and is shaped like a boat, hence called the “Boat Hall.” The owner, Yang Tianji (1882–1958), was a member of the Tongmenghui and the Nan She, as well as the uncle of the famous sociologist Fei Xiaotong. In 1903, Fei Xiaotong’s elder sister and renowned sericulture expert Fei Dasheng (1903–2005) was born here. In January 2005, the former residence of Yang Tianji was listed as a cultural relic protection unit of Wujiang City.

Yang Tianji (1882–1958). Secretary to Sun Yat-sen, styled Jun Gong, also known as Qian Li, with other aliases including Dong Fang, Tian Ma, and Wen Dao. His study was named Jian Lu. A prominent scholar and social activist of modern times. In his childhood, he followed his father to Zhenjiang where he studied poetry and calligraphy. Several years later, he returned to Tongli to continue his education and later became a teacher. He studied seal carving under Wu Changshuo. In the 25th year of the Guangxu reign (1899), he entered Nanyang Public School in Shanghai. In the 28th year of Guangxu (1902), he achieved the status of You Gong. In the 30th year of Guangxu, he worked as a Chinese language teacher at Zhendong School in Shanghai.
