The greatest advantage of Zhuanshanzi Reservoir is the incredibly fresh air. Nestled against mountains and beside water, it’s truly a perfect vacation destination.

After climbing a steep slope of about 40 degrees and crossing a very narrow stone bridge perched high in the mountains, you’ll finally come upon the legendary “Zhuanshanzi Reservoir.” If you happen to visit at sunset, golden rays spill across the gently rippling water, while a light breeze brushes your ears, carrying nothing but a fresh, moist scent. This scene and feeling might only exist in dreams.

The reservoir shore is covered in sandy ground, making it an ideal spot for barbecuing. Stone steps and railings surround the reservoir, so using open flames is very safe.

The water in the reservoir is clear, with glimpses of fish, both big and small, playing in the water.

Fishing: It’s very quiet here, with no noise or commotion, making it perfect for fishing. You can bring your own gear or rent from the nearby Sunshine Resort.

Barbecue: Those who wish to bring their own equipment can set up a fire on the riverbank to grill. For those not wanting to carry gear, there are dedicated barbecue grills available in the square at the Sunshine Resort next to the reservoir.

Driving route: 120 km from downtown Beijing (north of Miyun Reservoir, in Bulaidun).

Friendly reminder: The mountain roads are rugged—safety first. It’s best to drive there as there are no bus routes. Be sure to follow the road signs carefully, or you could easily get lost in the mountain paths. It’s difficult to make a day trip from Beijing, so it’s best to bring a tent or choose the fairly well-equipped Sunshine Resort.
