Yangzhou bonsai is one of the "five major schools" of Chinese bonsai. With its characteristics of "ancient elegance and delicate gracefulness," it has established a prominent position in the national bonsai community. The art of Yangzhou bonsai is also a national intangible cultural heritage.

Through long-term practice, Yangzhou bonsai has gradually developed its own distinctive features, especially in the category of tree-stump bonsai, where exceptional works continue to emerge, earning increasing acclaim. Yangzhou bonsai often uses evergreen plants such as pine, cypress, elm, and poplar, which are cultivated from a young age, meticulously shaped, and pruned into form. Meanwhile, Yangzhou’s flowering bonsai feature a rich variety of materials and designs, including winter jasmine, peach blossom, purple magnolia, and plum blossom, showcasing a unique style.

On April 18, 2009, the Yangzhou Bonsai Museum opened at the northern part of the "Jinquan Huayu" scenic area within the Slender West Lake. The former Yangzhou Bonsai Garden from Juan Shi Dong Tian was relocated here. Yangzhou bonsai is not only distinctive but also closely related to the theme of flowers. Relocating the bonsai garden to the "Garden of Ten Thousand Flowers" is truly a perfect match.

Unlike other museums, the Yangzhou Bonsai Museum houses living plants as its collections. In terms of landscape design, it integrates techniques of tree, mountain-and-water, dry-and-wet, and wall-mounted bonsai, creating a "bonsai-style garden landscape" with Yangzhou characteristics.

Since its opening, the museum has hosted the International Bonsai Convention and has been designated as the "World Bonsai Friendship Federation Exchange Center." It also regularly holds the "Bonsai Lecture Series," offering free demonstrations and tutorials on bonsai pruning, shaping, and care techniques to the public. Visitors and locals can experience the profound charm of this world cultural heritage through a dynamic and static exhibition.
