Jingxiang Study

Walking north along the eastern shore of the Slender West Lake from Wangchun Tower, you’ll find a courtyard halfway, which is the Jingxiang Study scenic area. The south-facing gate bears the name “Jingxiang Study.” Upon entering, you’ll see a lotus pond in front of the study, with a stone boat half-submerged in the water. The painted boat is only half a boat, the pavilion is a half pavilion, and the moon gate’s beautiful railing is also half—this unique design is remarkably distinctive. The Jingxiang Study was built in memory of Jin Nong, one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou. The four characters “Jingxiang Study” under the eaves are derived from Jin Nong’s calligraphy, characterized by slender and elongated forms, thick horizontal strokes, thin vertical strokes, and free-flowing sweeps and hooks. The ink is pitch-black, as if lacquered, hence called lacquer script.

The couplet on both sides of the main gate was written by Zheng Banqiao: “The flying pagoda soars halfway to the clouds; the study lies amid bamboo and trees.”

Looking north, you can see the majestic Qiling Pagoda standing proudly atop Shugang Hill; looking back at the study nearby, you’ll find bamboo and tall trees framing the pavilions and houses. “Flying pagoda” conveys motion, while “halfway to the clouds” exaggerates its height; “study” evokes tranquility, and “amid bamboo and trees” highlights the elegance of the study.
