The Song Dynasty Well is a Yangzhou municipal cultural relics protection unit.

Song Dynasty Well

Now a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit, it is located on Wenchang Middle Road in the city center. Built in the fourth year of the Jiari era during the Southern Song Dynasty (1240), the site was originally the southeastern corner of the Great Song City. This area was once Lianhua Bridge, later called Lianqiao East Lane. It is said the residence was built on the former site of Lianhua Nunnery, and the well belonged to the nunnery. The well is encircled by a bluestone coping, inscribed with the words “Imperial Song Jiari Year 4, Gengzi, to the Jie Festival, Shouchang, Monk Ji.” In 1987, when Qionghua Road was expanded and Lianhua Residential Area was constructed, the well was preserved in situ. The original well coping was collected by the cultural relics department, and a replica was made and placed on the well. A wall was built on the southern side of the well facing the street, with a stone plaque inscribed “Song Dynasty Well” embedded in it. On the northern side of the well, adjacent to the street, a square pavilion was added for viewing the well, forming a scenic spot.
