On the summit of Shu Gang West Peak, dense forests and tall bamboo stand amid ancient trees that reach to the sky, blending harmoniously with restored historical landmarks such as the Jade Hook Pavilion and the Eight Trigrams Pond. It serves as both a continuation and an elevation of the historical and cultural legacy of Shu Gang.

In 2003, the Yangzhou Municipal Government began constructing the Shu Gang West Peak Ecological Park, initiating the restoration of historical sites including the Jade Hook Pavilion and the Eight Trigrams Pond. In 2014, efforts were made to further expand and upgrade the park. The ecological park retains the original terrain and landscape, preserves existing vegetation such as camphor trees, poplars, and metasequoias, and introduces a variety of adaptable, ornamental native tree species and premium saplings through transplantation and cultivation. Over 80 types of trees have been newly planted, totaling more than 600,000 individual plants. Currently, the green space of Shu Gang West Peak has expanded to 400,000 square meters, making it a true urban “green lung.”

The Jade Hook Pavilion on the eastern side of Shu Gang West Peak is said to be the place where Emperor Yang of Sui buried his palace maids. Like a graceful maiden, the pavilion stands full of sorrow amid wild grass and setting sun, telling stories of historical vicissitudes and suffering.

The Eight Trigrams Pond is located on the southern side of Shu Gang West Peak Ecological Park and has historically served the drainage function of the ancient city of Yangzhou. With flowing water throughout the year, it is known for the saying “never dries up in fine weather, never overflows in rainy days.” According to records, Yunniang, the wife of Shen Fu from Six Chapters of a Floating Life—once described by Lin Yutang as “the loveliest woman in Chinese literature and history”—is also buried here.

Today’s Shu Gang West Peak boasts blooming flowers in spring, lotuses in summer, chrysanthemums in autumn, and plum blossoms in winter. With winding paths through secluded spots, surrounded by green waters, the area presents a picturesque rural scene. Amidst shaded groves, blooming flowers, fluttering butterflies, and chirping birds, couples and friends can often be seen strolling hand in hand, whispering intimately. Residents of Yangzhou and tourists from all over bring their families here to relax—whether for leisurely walks and fitness, photography, picnic meals on the grass, or flying kites. It feels like a hidden paradise within the hustle and bustle of the city.
