Huaduhui — Yangzhou Gardening Experience Center is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Huaduhui — Yangzhou Gardening Experience Center is located in the core area of the Slender West Lake Scenic Zone in Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province. The area includes various gardening experience zones such as the Hongyuan Flower, Bird, Fish, and Insect Market, the Collectibles Market, and the Yangzhou Bonsai Garden. Visitors can engage in gardening activities and leisure entertainment here. Surrounded by picturesque scenery, they may occasionally recall the former life of this vibrant world — a once-abandoned landfill.

Twenty years ago, the Xiaomaoshan Landfill was built in Hanjiang District, Yangzhou, to handle most of the city's waste. As the urban area gradually expanded, the landfill ceased operations in 1999. After a makeshift capping, it lay abandoned for nearly two decades.

As Yangzhou continued to develop, the site of the Xiaomaoshan Landfill transitioned from a remote urban fringe to a connecting node between the old city and the Slender West Lake Scenic Zone. Decades of accumulated waste gradually seeped into the soil, and the abandoned earth excavated during the construction of the Slender West Lake Tunnel formed muddy pools. Under minimal protective measures, foul odors wafted from the garbage, the mounds posed collapse risks, and the fluid sludge presented numerous safety hazards, making the redevelopment of the abandoned landfill an urgent priority.

The Huaduhui project was constructed by Yangzhou Landscape Architecture & Construction Engineering Co., Ltd. According to Lu Wei, the company’s general manager, the project achieved numerous breakthroughs and innovations based on traditional Yangzhou gardening techniques.

The legacy of being a former landfill posed significant challenges to the project’s execution. However, once these challenges were addressed one by one, this “former identity” endowed Huaduhui with unique characteristics and charm.
