Nanjing Folk Museum

The Nanjing Folk Museum is located within the Ganxi Mansion in the Xinanli Cultural Block of Nanjing. In 1982, during a citywide cultural relics survey, the Nanjing cultural relics department discovered the Ganxi Ancestral House — a large-scale residential complex from the Qing Dynasty known as the "Ninety-Nine and a Half Rooms" — hidden in the bustling urban area. It was listed as a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit.

At that time, the ancient buildings housed a mix of residents, were dilapidated, and had undergone extensive alterations and unauthorized constructions. But from that moment on, with the high attention and direct care of the municipal Party committee and government, the Ganxi Ancestral House received emergency protection. In 1986, to scientifically preserve and rationally utilize Nanjing’s traditional residences, the cultural relics department began establishing the Nanjing Folk Museum within the Ganxi Ancestral House. In 1992, part of Building No. 19 on Nanbu Ting was restored, and on November 18, the Nanjing Folk Museum was completed and opened to the public.

Folk cultural relics and phenomena are a special crystallization of culture. Through exhibitions and visitor-participatory activities, the museum aims to promote the outstanding culture of the Chinese nation, allowing people to be immersed in local art, inspiring love for the motherland and hometown, guiding them to embrace new customs and abandon outdated ones, and better serve the construction of socialist spiritual civilization.
