Ling Shan Scenic Area – Hundred Children Playing with Maitreya

The large-scale bronze art masterpiece “Hundred Children Playing with Maitreya” is located on the right side of the Ashoka Pillar Square at the foot of the Grand Buddha in Wuxi’s Ling Shan. The Maitreya Buddha stands 3 meters tall, is 7.8 meters wide, and weighs 9 tons. Auspicious and festive in spirit, it is beloved by visitors. The reclining Maitreya has a kind and amiable expression with an infectious smile. On his massive body, a full hundred mischievous children are sculpted, each with unique expressions and lifelike poses. Some are stacking up in a human tower, some are performing acrobatics, some are playing tug-of-war, some are cleaning their ears, some are wrestling, some are poking the Maitreya’s belly button with small twigs, and the naughtiest ones are even peeing on the Maitreya. With a hundred children scattered across his body, it’s hard not to laugh. A hundred playful kids climbing all over the smiling Maitreya adds a lively touch to the otherwise solemn Ling Shan.
