Xu Yun wore a white strapless short dress, while Lei Junfei donned a short red cycling outfit, paired with two white mountain bikes. This was their "wedding carriage." But the couple wasn’t alone. 220 cycling enthusiasts volunteered to join in the "escort." From the bride’s residence in Yicheng, through Binhu, and then to Wuhu Road, this unique wedding convoy cycled over 20 kilometers.
A 10-color cycling fleet escorts the bride
At around 1 p.m. on April 29, from Yicheng to Binhu and then to Wuhu Road, a colorful scene unfolded — it was this group of cyclists in various colored outfits forming a unique wedding procession.
The bride wore a white short strapless dress, and the groom sported a tight cycling suit. Covering the 20-plus-kilometer journey from Yicheng to Binhu and then to Wuhu Road, the convoy made stops along the way and completed the ride in under an hour.
Even though they were bicycles, they were decked out for the wedding. The bride and groom’s bikes were adorned with fresh flowers, while other cyclists’ bikes were decorated with balloons. The cyclists were divided into 10 major color groups, each forming a “wedding escort” unit.
220 cyclists volunteer to celebrate
These 220 cyclists weren’t hired — they volunteered to send their blessings. Organizer Chen Gang explained, “We posted a call for volunteers on the forum. Initially, over 100 signed up, but in the end, 220 showed up.”
To ensure the smooth running of the wedding, Chen Gang and the other cyclists put in a lot of effort. “We scouted the route a week in advance, reserved the outfits, and arranged for on-site coordination.” Due to the large number of participants, it was eventually decided that everyone would wear one of ten unified colors. The cyclists were grouped into squads of 20 and platoons of 40, each with a captain to maintain order.
Finally, when the clock struck three, the convoy arrived at its destination.
The stars of the bike wedding were bride Xu Yun, 28, from Yicheng Town in Hefei, and groom Lei Junfei, 32, from Hong Kong. The couple has since relocated to the United States.
How did the idea of a bike wedding come about? It was actually the Hefei bride who first thought of it. She once happened to witness a bike wedding a few years ago, and ever since, this creative idea became her dream wedding. That’s also how she fell in love with cycling. Inspired by her, Lei Junfei also started cycling. When the couple recently started planning their wedding, Xu Yun proposed the idea of a bike wedding. To her surprise, they both agreed instantly, leading to this uniquely memorable celebration.
