Guide - Bamboo Grove Temple: It is said to have been originally built during the Eastern Jin Dynasty and flourished during the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty, with a total of 259 halls and rooms in the temple. Due to continuous warfare, Bamboo Grove Temple was ultimately destroyed during the Anti-Japanese War. Currently, only the Vajra Hall (also known as the Heavenly King Hall), Lin Gong Spring, and Yijiang Pavilion remain. Zhao Yin Temple: Walking from Bamboo Grove Temple to Zhao Yin, you will notice more and more butterflies as you approach. The plaque at the entrance of Zhao Yin Mountain, inscribed with “City within the Mountains” (城市山林), is an authentic work by Mi Fu, the great calligrapher and painter of the Northern Song Dynasty. Mi Fu and his son lived in Nanshan for a full forty years and pioneered the “Mi Family Cloudy Mountains School” of painting here. Dai Kui and his daughter lived in seclusion here for twenty-five years, composing the famous musical pieces “Youxian” (游弦), “Guangling” (广陵), and “Zhixi” (止息). It was also here that Xiao Tong, the Crown Prince Zhaoming of the Liang Dynasty, invited literary talents such as Liu Xie to compile China’s earliest anthology of poetry and prose, the “Wenxuan” (昭明文选). Literary Garden: Located east of Bamboo Grove Temple, this classical garden was newly built in memory of Liu Xie, a renowned literary theorist of the Southern Dynasties, and his monumental literary critique work, “The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons” (文心雕龙). Special Note: The southern suburbs cover a large area, and the distance between scenic spots is considerable. Moreover, due to the low number of visitors, taxis will only drop you off, and there are no vacant taxis waiting at the entrances of the scenic sites. Therefore, for visiting the southern suburbs, these two temples are sufficient.
