Guide Xijin Ancient Ferry Street was located by the Yangtze River in ancient times and served as a dock. The Italian traveler Marco Polo once landed here on his way to the Jiangnan region. Today, the street is still lined with adjacent ornately carved wooden buildings, which were once incense shops. In the center of the street stands the only overstreet stone pagoda in the Jiangnan area. Built during the Yuan Dynasty, it was constructed under the decree of Emperor Wuzong of Yuan, Haisan, and overseen by the craftsman Liu Gao, who was responsible for building the White Pagoda Temple in Dadu. The words "Zhao Guan" are engraved on the eastern and western sides of the pagoda’s base. According to Buddhist interpretation, the pagoda is the Buddha itself, so passing through the archway beneath the pagoda is considered an act of worshiping the Buddha. The former site of the British Consulate is an arcaded building from the latter half of the 19th century. In 1996, it was designated as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level by the State Council. Guanyin Cave was first built during the Song Dynasty and renovated in the ninth year of the Xianfeng reign of the Qing Dynasty (1859). Inside the cave stands a white stone statue of the Guanyin Bodhisattva. There are also two other shrines on either side. On the eastern side is the “Putuo Rock Hall” of the Bodhisattva of Vision, and on the western side is the “Kṣitigarbha Hall” of the Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva. Not far from Guanyin Cave are two Taoist sites: the Ziyang Cave and the ruins of the Iron Pillar Palace. Introduction Xijin Ancient Ferry Street is located at the foot of Yuntai Mountain in the western part of Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province. Stretching approximately 1,000 meters, it originated during the Six Dynasties period and was developed through the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, resulting in its current form. As a result, the entire street is scattered with historical traces from the Six Dynasties to the Qing Dynasty. Transportation You can take bus No. 2 from the train station to get there. Taxis from the city center to various attractions generally cost less than 10 yuan, and rickshaws are also available.
