Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit, Third Batch, March 1982 The Zhanguan Stone Pagoda was built during the Yuan Dynasty and rebuilt in the tenth year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (1582). Located on Wushisan Slope in Zhenjiang City.

Introduction

It is named “Zhanguan Stone Pagoda” because the two characters “Zhanguan” are carved on the pagoda. It is also called “Bottle Pagoda” due to its bottle-like shape. Legend has it that it was built during the union of Sun Quan of the Three Kingdoms period and Liu Bei’s family, and was known as the “Stone Bottle” at the time. In fact, it was constructed in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties.

The Zhanguan Stone Pagoda is a Lama-style stone pagoda. The lower part is built with block stones forming four stone pillars, topped with flat stone slabs to create a frame-like platform, allowing pedestrians and horses to pass underneath. It lies horizontally across the middle of a small street, adding an antique charm to this riverside town. The stone pagoda is built upon this platform.

The pagoda is 4.69 meters high. Its base, body, and top are all carved from bluestone. The base consists of two identical Sumeru pedestals stacked together, with an inverted lotus round seat and a flat drum-shaped pagoda body above. There are 13 bands of belt-like reliefs above, symbolizing the 13 Buddhist heavens, supporting a wheel adorned with “Eight Treasures.” Above the wheel is the pagoda top. The east and west crossbeams of the pagoda platform bear the same inscriptions, with the names of local magistrates and prefects from Dantu and Zhenjiang engraved on the left and right sides.
