Attraction Introduction

Nanshan Scenic Area is the collective name for a group of mountains including Zhaoyin Mountain, Yellow Crane Mountain, Jia Mountain, and Jiuhua Mountain. It consists of the Zhaoyin Scenic Area, Bamboo Grove Scenic Area, Helin Scenic Area, and the Literary Garden. The area features undulating hills, bamboo forests, and harmonious scenes of flowers and birds, making it a truly beautiful destination.

Though perhaps not as famous today as Jinshan or Beigushan, Nanshan has been a favored residence and tourist destination for countless literati and dignitaries since the Northern and Southern Dynasties. Its greatest charm lies in its serene and tranquil atmosphere, in contrast to the hustle and bustle of the other two. China’s first comprehensive anthology of poetry and prose, the Selections of Refined Literature (Zhaoming Wenxuan), and the first major work of literary theory, the Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons (Wenxin Diaolong), were both compiled here. Hundreds of scholars, poets, emperors, and generals—including Luo Binwang, Wang Changling, Su Dongpo, Emperor Kangxi, and Emperor Qianlong—have left behind poetic tributes to Nanshan. Today, Zhenjiang is known as the “city of forests and hills,” a phrase coined by the famous Northern Song Dynasty painter Mi Fu after admiring Nanshan.

Special Tips

The Nanshan Scenic Area is quite large, with attractions spread out and inconvenient transportation between them. Moreover, some sites do not offer particularly unique views, so visiting the area around Bamboo Grove Temple is sufficient.
