Grave of Liu Yizheng

The grave of Liu Yizheng is located at Zhujiagang in Guantang Township, Zhenjiang City.

Liu Yizheng, courtesy name Yimou, was a native of Zhenjiang and a renowned modern Chinese educator, classical scholar, librarian, and patriot. He served as a professor of literature and history at universities such as Southeast University, Northeastern University, Zhejiang University, and National Central University. He was an academician at the Academia Sinica and long-time director of the Jiangsu Provincial National Studies Library. He wrote monographs and academic papers including A Brief History of Dynasties, History of Chinese Culture, Histories of East Asian Countries, and An Overview of Chinese Editions, along with more than 130 scholarly articles. During the War of Resistance against Japan, he took the initiative to hide all the fine editions from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties housed in the Nanjing Library, thereby preserving these national cultural treasures from enemy seizure. On the eve of the liberation, despite orders from the Kuomintang government, he had eight thousand volumes of precious ancient books packed and carefully protected, contributing substantially to the people. After 1949, he was appointed as a committee member of the Shanghai Cultural Relics Preservation Committee and passed away in 1956.

Liu’s grave is a round earthen mound approximately three meters in diameter and one point five meters high. It is part of a family burial site and remains well-preserved. In recent years, his grandson Liu Zengfu erected a gravestone in front of the tomb, inscribed with the words “Tomb of Our Ancestor Liu, Courtesy Name Yimou.”
