Xu Genbao Football Base

The Xu Genbao Football Base is situated at the southern end of Chongming Dongping National Forest Park. It was established by the well-known national-level football coach Xu Genbao, covering a total area of more than 70 acres. The facility includes three and a half standard football fields, an indoor pitch with German-imported artificial turf, and a football hotel occupying 7,000 square meters. With a total investment of approximately 30 million RMB, construction began in 2000 and was fully completed on October 1, 2001.

The construction of the Xu Genbao Football Base has received significant attention and care from leaders at all levels. The State Physical Culture and Sports Commission and the Chinese Football Association have issued special approvals and directives, and [a distinguished comrade] even personally inscribed a message.

"A cradle for football stars and a beacon of hope for going global" — high hopes have been placed on the base. After hearing Coach Xu Genbao’s report, relevant municipal leaders in Shanghai also expressed their support for the project. Gong Xueping, then Deputy Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee, set higher standards for the base in his inscription: "High-quality education, scientific training, and military-style management." The base currently hosts nearly 100 students, with team members coming from Shanghai, Shandong, Hubei, Anhui, and other regions. The goal is to have 8 players selected for the national youth team by 2007, 3 for the national team by 2010, and 8 for the Olympic team by 2012. Cultivating young football players primarily involves improving their foundational skills and abilities. The base has specially appointed Nian Weisi, former chairman of the Chinese Football Association, as a senior advisor, with Coach Xu Genbao himself serving as the head coach. A number of grassroots coaches with long-term experience in youth football training have also been hired to scientifically plan training loads and tailor programs according to the physical and mental development needs of young players.

The base also offers comprehensive facilities for tourists to visit and relax — the Football Hotel. This modern three-story glass-steel structure building houses economy rooms, standard rooms, and luxury suites. It features a high-spec multi-functional banquet hall that can accommodate over 100 guests, a 120-square-meter conference room with complete facilities, an elegant lobby café, as well as recreational venues such as karaoke, dance hall, chess and card rooms, table tennis room, and billiards room.

The Xu Genbao Football Base is not only a cradle for nurturing outstanding football stars but also a new tourist destination on the island.
