Lanzhou plans to construct an urban mountain biking theme park covering an area of 3,280 mu in Xiaodaziping on the northern mountain of Chengguan District. This project will be promoted as one of the key investment attraction projects at the 19th Lanzhou Investment and Trade Fair.
Cycling is a sport that combines speed, strength, and endurance. As a modern sport, it has a history of over 100 years. Cycling is highly popular in Europe and America, ranking as the second most popular sport after football. Beyond professional competitions, cycling has become a symbol of healthy and fashionable living. China was once known as the "Kingdom of Bicycles." Statistics show that the number of bicycles in China exceeds 600 million. However, for decades, bicycles have mainly served as a means of transportation for the general public, with limited participation in cycling as a professional sport. In the past decade, as living standards have improved and public awareness of health and environmental protection has grown, more people have come to value the health and eco-friendly benefits of cycling. Coupled with China’s uniquely broad cycling enthusiast base, competitive cycling and amateur cycling for health, entertainment, and leisure have developed rapidly. In recent years, major international cycling events such as the Tour of Qinghai Lake, Tour of Chongming Island, Tour of Hainan Island, and Tour of the South China Sea have been held annually across the country, greatly encouraging widespread public participation in cycling.
Based on these factors, enterprises in Gansu have proposed building an urban mountain biking theme park within the Beishan Forest Farm. The theme park faces the Yellow River to the south and borders the Xingangcheng residential community below; to the west is the Xujia Mountain National Forest Park; and to the east, it is only 3 kilometers away from Lanzhou’s under-development “Lanzhou Eastern New City.” The forest area has planted over 1.8 million trees, with green coverage exceeding 75%. It boasts rich natural conditions and is free from pollution-emitting industries, offering fresh air — making it highly suitable for constructing sports and leisure facilities. It is reported that preliminary communications with relevant Lanzhou departments have already taken place and received approval. The “Project Proposal” has been drafted, and design and project application procedures are currently underway.
According to information, the park’s overall functions will include: designated mountain biking trails and roads, specialized BMX extreme sports areas, recreational cycling spaces, walking and hiking leisure routes, as well as other sports venues. Additionally, it will feature management and reception centers, exhibition halls, commercial facilities, dining options, parking lots, and other service amenities. Preliminary estimates suggest the project will require an investment of approximately 500–800 million yuan. The overall construction will be divided into two phases, each with a one-year timeline. Upon completion of the first phase, some facilities will be ready for use.
