Chongming Island National Geopark

Chongming Island National Geopark is a national geopark and a science education base.

Chongming Island National Geopark was established on September 19, 2005, with the approval of the Ministry of Land and Resources of the People's Republic of China. The park covers the entire Chongming Island, stretching approximately 76 kilometers from east to west and about 13–18 kilometers from north to south, with a total area of around 1,200 square kilometers. The park is situated at the mouth of the mighty Yangtze River, facing Jiading and Baoshan across the river to the south, and bordering Haimen and Qidong of Jiangsu Province to the north, like a shining pearl nestled within the mouth of the Yangtze River dragon.

As the world’s largest estuarine alluvial sand island, Chongming Island preserves a wealth of geological relics and landform landscapes. The complete deltaic stratigraphic system records sea-level changes over the past 2.6 million years; ancient sand dunes, well-preserved historical seawalls, and tide-blocking embankments bear witness to Shanghai’s transition from sea to land; the beautiful and unique tidal channels, wave ripples, and steep scarps represent typical muddy tidal flat landforms; and the complex tidal movements, river bifurcation, saltwater intrusion, and maximum turbidity zone landscapes exemplify the dynamic forces that shape large estuarine landforms. The park’s unique environment has given rise to distinctive wetland vegetation such as seablite, reed, and Phragmites, and it is home to important globally migrating rare bird species as well as unique ecological species like the “living fossil” Chinese sturgeon. The area also features numerous natural and cultural-historical sites, particularly notable ones including Dongping National Forest Park, Xuegong (Confucian Temple), and Shou’an Temple. With clean water and soil, fresh air, beautiful scenery, and fascinating geological science, the park is an ideal destination for leisure, travel, and scientific research.

Transportation Guide: Take the Shen-Chong shuttle bus line (from Ximen Bus Station in Chengqiao Town to North District Hub Station on North Zhongshan Road), then transfer to the Nanjian Line to Xinjian Sluice after arriving in Chengqiao Town.
