South Gate Port Riverside Scenic Embankment

The South Gate Riverside Scenic Embankment (also known as the Seawall Standard Achievement Project) was fully completed on October 20, 2000. The scenic embankment stretches 670 meters from the No. 3 Wharf of "Yatong" in the west to the east side of Yingzhou Park in the east. The entire front face of the embankment is constructed with reinforced concrete, featuring 15 sets of 12-tiered, 30-meter-long resting ramps, and includes two-tiered waterfront platforms at the 3.65-meter and 6.85-meter tidal lines. The embankment is equipped with three light strips, and its colorful brick-paved surface is furnished with amenities such as benches, speakers, and telephone booths. The landmark structure in the middle section of the embankment is a grand ensemble of nine Roman-style arches, the tallest of which stands 12 meters high. Right in front of the arches on the bank stands a 4.8-meter-high granite monument carved in the shape of Chongming Island, standing proudly upright.

The construction of the South Gate Riverside Scenic Embankment incorporates the advanced concepts of “people-oriented” design and the harmonious integration of humans and nature. It serves not only as a serpentine fortress capable of withstanding a once-in-a-century storm surge combined with a category 12 typhoon, but also as a new tourist and leisure attraction on the island.

Transportation Guide: Take the Shen-Chong shuttle bus line (from Ximen Bus Station in Chengqiao Town to North District Hub Station on North Zhongshan Road) directly; take the Pengshi Line (from Pengpu New Village to Shidongkou Wharf) to Baoshan Shidongkou Wharf, then take a ferry to Chengqiao Town in Chongming, and turn right after boarding to reach the destination; or take a passenger ferry from Baoyang Road Wharf in Baoshan District directly to Baozhen Wharf, then transfer to the Nanbao Line to reach Chengqiao Town Bus Station. After getting off, walk toward the direction of South Gate Port Wharf.
