Shanghai Yangtze River Bridge Project

The Shanghai Yangtze River Bridge Project is one of the key components of the South Tunnel North Bridge corridor connecting Shanghai to Chongming Island. It starts at the tunnel landing point on Changxing Island, runs across the island’s surface, then crosses the northern channel of the Yangtze River Estuary from the northeastern part of Changxing Island to Chenjia Town on Chongming Island, where it connects with the Chongqi Passage Project. The total length is 16.63 kilometers.

The Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge project is the largest of its kind in the world. The combined tunnel and bridge stretch 25.5 kilometers, featuring the world’s largest diameter tunnel and the world’s largest combined road and rail cable-stayed bridge. It is currently the largest integrated tunnel-bridge project globally. Additionally, it breaks the 50-meter depth record of the Tokyo Bay Tunnel in Japan, reaching a maximum depth of 55 meters underwater, with no leakage in the riverbed section of the tunnel.

The main tower of the Yangtze River Bridge features a unique design, differing from the inverted Y-shape of the Yangpu Bridge, the A-frame of the Xupu Bridge, and the H-shape of the Nanpu Bridge. Instead, it adopts a “H” (human) shaped single-tower design, with a straight deck passing through the middle—symbolizing the unity of heaven and humanity. As the future “First Bridge at the Gateway of the Yangtze,” its elegant and majestic landscape is also one of the hallmarks of the Shanghai Yangtze River Bridge.

"Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge Vehicle Toll Classification and Rate Table"

Toll rates are set for seven different vehicle categories, with trucks generally charged slightly more per trip than comparable passenger vehicles. The tunnel tolls are slightly lower than those for the Yangtze River Bridge.

According to the rate table, passenger vehicles with 7 seats or fewer, as well as those with 8–19 seats, are charged 20 yuan for the tunnel (Changxing Island–Pudong) and 30 yuan for the bridge (Changxing Island–Chongming Island), totaling 50 yuan for both tunnel and bridge.

The highest toll is for trucks with a load capacity of over 15 tons: 60 yuan for the tunnel, 85 yuan for the bridge, totaling 145 yuan.

Special vehicles such as military and police vehicles are exempt from Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge tolls, in accordance with Article 7 of the "Regulations on the Administration of Toll Roads" and relevant national and municipal policies.

Vehicles for “vegetable basket” supplies and public transport (including dedicated bus lines) are exempt from tolls under a fixed-route and fixed-vehicle policy.

In addition, enterprises registered in Chongming and vehicles licensed in Chongming may apply for toll discounts by completing the relevant procedures.
