Sheshan is located in the northwest of Songjiang District, about 30 kilometers from downtown Shanghai. Within its territory, there are 12 peaks of varying sizes stretching 13 kilometers from northeast to southwest, including Beigan Mountain, Fenghuang Mountain, Yuping Mountain, Shegong Mountain, East Sheshan, West Sheshan, Chenshan, Zhongjia Mountain, Tianma Mountain, Xiaojishan, Hengyun Mountain, and Xiaokunshan. The total mountainous area covers 401 hectares. In Chinese culture, the number "nine" is considered auspicious and significant, and as Songjiang is also known as "Yunjian" (Cloud Region), these peaks are collectively referred to as the "Nine Peaks of Yunjian." Historically, Sheshan has been the most renowned, so the collective area of these peaks is commonly called the Sheshan region. The Sheshan area boasts a long religious history and rich cultural heritage. It is a convergence point for Catholicism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Taoism. For over a century, it has also been a sacred site for Catholicism in Southeast Asia. West Sheshan is home to the largest Catholic church in the Far East—the Sheshan Basilica—and China’s first observatory—the Sheshan Astronomical Observatory. East Sheshan National Forest Park features beautiful landscapes, lush forests, and abundant flora and fauna. Attractions such as Foxincense Spring, Heart-Cleansing Spring, Third Cold Spring, and Meigong Fishing Rock complement each other beautifully; while Wooden Fish Stone, Qilong Weir Stele, Qilong Ancient Path, Moon-Reciting Terrace, and Moon Shadow Tower create a picturesque scene. Between East and West Sheshan stands the Xiudaozhe Pagoda, built during the Northern Song Dynasty. This seven-story, octagonal brick-and-wood structure boasts elegant proportions.

Emperor Kangxi's Inscription: "Orchid Bamboo Mountain"

In the spring of the 59th year of Emperor Kangxi’s reign (1720), Kangxi bestowed the title "Orchid Bamboo Mountain" upon Sheshan and personally wrote the plaque, which was then delivered to Sheshan by two imperial envoys. On the 11th day of the third lunar month that year, a grand ceremony was held at Xuanmiao Buddhist Hall to honor the plaque. Since then, Sheshan has also been known as "Orchid Bamboo Mountain."

Transportation

Take Tourist Bus Line 1B from Shanghai Stadium, or Hu-Chen Line or Hu-Sheshan-Kun Line from West Bus Station directly to Sheshan. Tourist shuttle buses are also available from Nanpu Bridge, Shanghai Stadium, North Bus Station, and Shanghai West Railway Station. Buses from Songjiang, Qingpu, Jiading, Jinshan, and Fengxian all provide direct service to Sheshan.
