West Sheshan Scenic Area

West Sheshan is located on the western peak of Sheshan Mountain, with an elevation of 97.2 meters. Towering ancient trees and shady bamboo groves create a serene atmosphere. Its splendid cultural landmarks and picturesque natural scenery attract numerous domestic and international visitors.

Key attractions include the internationally famous Sheshan Basilica, renowned for its prestige and grand architecture as the largest church in Southeast Asia and a landmark of Sheshan; the Sheshan Observatory, established in the 24th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty, boasting a century-long history and ranking among China’s earliest and largest observatories; the Xiudaozhe Pagoda, perched halfway up the mountain, slender and octagonal with seven stories, exuding delicate beauty and recognized as one of Sheshan’s famous historic sites; and the Seismic Station nestled at the eastern foot of West Sheshan amid bamboo groves, offering tranquility and scenic beauty. Originally part of the Shanghai Observatory, it has a century-long history and is also one of the world’s oldest seismic research institutions.

The newly built Bamboo Sea Amusement Park in 2002 covers an area of 20,000 square meters and is currently one of China’s most innovative leisure and recreational destinations, integrating relaxation, extreme challenges, and sports fitness. The park features a variety of entertainment activities: the mysterious “Bagua Maze”; the dynamic and thrilling “Grassland Slide”; the “Long March Trail,” consisting of eight activities including “Horse Gallop” and “Aerial Crossing”; the “100-Meter Obstacle Course,” comprising six activities such as “Taking Risks,” “Crossing Mountains,” and “Scaling Cliffs,” which test courage and showcase wit; along with dozens of participatory activities like the Waterfall Monkey Mountain, archery range, mudfish-catching area, and double hammocks. The Bamboo Sea Amusement Park is suitable for all ages, offering great fun and a blend of participatory, cultural, natural, and personalized experiences in a leisure, recreation, and sports setting.

The open-air West Sheshan Tea Plantation is Shanghai’s only tea-producing area. The locally grown Sheshan Green Tea is a renowned specialty of the mountain, often referred to as “Shanghai Longjing.” Connecting East and West Sheshan is the Sheshan Cable Car, which offers riders breathtaking views of the pastoral scenery across the Sheshan region.

Sheshan Town: Located in the southwestern part of Shanghai within Songjiang District, Sheshan Town borders Songjiang University Town and sits 35 kilometers from downtown Shanghai and 18 kilometers from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport. Covering an area of 74.7 square kilometers, the town administers 13 administrative villages and 2 neighborhood committees, with a population of 45,000, making it the largest town in Songjiang District by land area.
