Songjiang Ecological Water Conservancy Scenic Area

The Songjiang Ecological Water Conservancy Scenic Area is a national water conservancy scenic area.

Located in the southwest of Shanghai, the Songjiang Ecological Water Conservancy Scenic Area is the only water conservancy scenic area in China named after an administrative region, covering an area of 604 square kilometers.

Songjiang is a cultural ancient city with a history of over 1,250 years, where ancient culture and historical sites are found throughout the district, earning it the reputation of “witnessing the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties — from ancient times to the present.” The Songjiang Ecological Water Conservancy Scenic Area, built upon its long-standing historical and cultural heritage, centers around ecology, landscape, culture, leisure, and tourism, forming an overall layout characterized by “mountain-city scenic integration, unobstructed water systems, return to nature, leisure vacationing, and showcasing unique features.” In the northern part of the scenic area, there are 12 peaks including Sheshan Mountain, which is the only mountainous landscape in the Shanghai area. By excavating Yuehu Lake, a unique landscape of mountains and waters has been created, forming a “mountain-scene connection” water scenic line. In the central part of the scenic area lies a modern European-style new town, where landscape waterways such as Longxing Port, Greenbelt River, Campus River, and Zhangjiabang have been constructed, organically connecting the urban scenery of Songjiang New Town and highlighting a cultural, ecological, and leisure-oriented urban water scenic line. In the southern part of the scenic area, the Huangpu River — the mother river of Shanghai — flows through the region as its upper mainstream, connecting with over 1,000 other waterways across the district, forming a “mother river” heritage exploration water scenic line.

As the backyard garden of Shanghai’s international metropolis, the Songjiang Ecological Water Conservancy Scenic Area attracts a large number of domestic and international tourists for sightseeing and vacationing every year.
