Shanghai Chen Shan Botanical Garden is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a science education base.

Shanghai Chen Shan Botanical Garden (ShanghaiChenShanBotanicalGarden) is located at No. 3888 Chenhua Highway, Songjiang District, Shanghai. It opened to the public on January 23, 2011. Jointly built by the Shanghai Municipal Government, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the State Forestry Administration, and the Chinese Academy of Forestry, it is an AAAA-level comprehensive botanical garden integrating scientific research, science education, and sightseeing.

The garden is divided into four major functional areas: the central exhibition area, the plant conservation area, the five-continent plant area, and the peripheral buffer zone. Covering an area of 2.07 million square meters, it is the largest botanical garden in East China and also the second botanical garden in Shanghai.

Shanghai Chen Shan Botanical Garden (ChenShanShanghaiBotanicalGarden) is located at No. 3888 Chenhua Highway, Songjiang District, Shanghai, within the Sheshan National Tourism Resort. It opened to the public on January 23, 2011. Covering an area of 2.0763 million square meters, it is the largest botanical garden in East China. The botanical garden was jointly built by the Shanghai Municipal Government, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the State Forestry Administration, and the Chinese Academy of Forestry. It is a comprehensive botanical garden integrating scientific research, science education, and sightseeing.

Chen Shan is one of the Nine Peaks of Songjiang (referred to as the "Nine Peaks of Yunjian" in the Shanghai Place Names Gazetteer) and belongs to the Sheshan mountain range, with an elevation of about 70 meters. According to records from the Ming Dynasty by Dong Qichang, Chen Shan is “located southeast of the other peaks, ranking second in the direction of Chen,” hence its name. In the 20th century, due to quarrying, the southern slope of the mountain was leveled. This part was transformed into the Quarry Garden in the design of the botanical garden.

By April 2010, the garden had collected approximately 9,000 plant species, the majority of which were native to East China, totaling more than 1,500 species. As a result, Shanghai Chen Shan Botanical Garden became the botanical garden with the richest collection of plants from the East China flora.

By December 2010, the number of rare and endangered live plants (i.e., national first- and second-class protected plants) collected by Chen Shan Botanical Garden reached 107 species, including Acer yangjuechi (AceryangjuechiFang), Carpinus putoensis (CarpinusputoensisCheng), Calycanthus chinensis (CalycanthuschinensisChengetS.Y.Chang), and Bretschneidera sinensis (BretschneidarasinensisHemsi).

Some of these plants are extremely rare species with only a few surviving individuals in the wild, some are highly ornamental, and many are valuable medicinal and wild fruit plants.

On September 28, 2012, Professor Liu Baodong from Harbin Normal University donated artificially propagated spore seedlings of Isoetes sinensis (Chinese water fern), a national first-class protected plant, to the botanical garden. Professor Liu Baodong was the first to successfully propagate this critically endangered species in 2005. The plants housed in the botanical garden will be used for science education and species conservation.
