Shanghai Square Pagoda Park

Square Pagoda Park is located in the southeast corner of Songjiang District, adjacent to Songjiang No. 2 High School. Opened to the public in 1981, it covers an area of approximately 180 acres. The garden design centers around the Square Pagoda, featuring an artfully arranged, open, and expansive layout that blends modern landscaping concepts with the traditional classical garden style of southern China. Major attractions include the Square Pagoda and structures from the Ming Dynasty. The Songjiang Square Pagoda features a graceful form and delicate details, which are rarely seen in ancient architecture of southern China, and is one of the best-preserved ancient pagodas in China.

It was opened to the public in 1981 and covers a total area of 182 acres. The site was originally the bustling downtown area of the ancient Huating County during the Tang and Song dynasties. To the east lies Aimin Street and to the west San Gong Street. It was not only a gathering place for ancient literati but also a microcosm of Songjiang’s historical heritage. In 1978, the park was established with the central attraction being the Square Pagoda. The layout is thoughtfully designed, open, and expansive, merging modern landscaping ideas with the traditional classical garden style of southern China. Visiting Square Pagoda Park, a place rich in ancient architecture and cultural relics, naturally evokes a sense of nostalgia and reverence for the sages of old. Major attractions within the park include: the Song Dynasty Square Pagoda, the Song Dynasty Wangxian Bridge, the Ming Dynasty brick-carved screen wall, the Lantai Hall, and the Shuili Pond. The screen wall is a large relief sculpture located to the north of the Square Pagoda. Built in the third year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1370 AD), it served as the decorative wall in front of a Taoist temple. The screen wall is 6.1 meters wide and 4.75 meters tall, originally standing in front of the gate of the Songjiang Prefecture Temple of the City God. It is the oldest, most intricate, and best-preserved large-scale brick carving artwork in the Shanghai area. The creature depicted on the screen is called “Tan” (Greed), with the head of a dragon, the tail of a lion, the body of an ox, the hooves of a deer, and scales resembling those of a qilin. It serves as a moral lesson against greed. The imagery is rich and exhibits strong three-dimensionality, making it a true artistic masterpiece.
