Shanghai International Studies University

Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), established in December 1949, was the first higher education institution of foreign languages founded after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China and one of the birthplaces of foreign language education in the new China. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and co-built with the Shanghai Municipal Government; it is also part of the national “211 Project” and “Double First-Class” initiative.

Adhering to the motto “High Aspirations and Noble Character, Mastery of Both Chinese and Foreign Cultures” and the educational philosophy of “Interpreting the World, Shaping the Future,” SISU is committed to the mission of “Serving National Development, Fostering Holistic Human Development, Advancing Social Progress, and Promoting People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges Between China and the World.” The university strives to become a world-class institution of foreign languages with distinctive strengths in global and regional knowledge.
