Shanghai Chen Shan Botanical Garden's Quarry Garden

The Quarry Garden is one of the scenic areas in Shanghai Chen Shan Botanical Garden, located in the northwest corner of the garden, near the northwest entrance. It was designed by Professor Zhu Yufan from Tsinghua University and constructed by Qingyuan Depp Pontoon Co., Ltd. The site of the quarry was originally a century-old artificial mining site. Based on the requirements for slope protection, hazard prevention, and ecological restoration, and inspired by the ancient Chinese concept of "Shangri-La" or reclusive paradise as seen in the “Peach Blossom Spring,” the designer utilized the existing landscape features to create elements such as waterfalls, cliffs, plank walks, and a waterfall cave that blend closely with the natural terrain. These features enhance visitors’ connection with nature. The existing rock textures on the mountain were further carved to resemble the form and artistic mood of traditional Chinese landscape paintings. The Quarry Garden highlights the theme of restorative gardening and stands as one of the premier horticultural gardens in China.
